Jesus Is Buried
Mark 15: 42 When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 
43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent and respected member of the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God—and he courageously dared to go in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 
44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time [only six hours after being crucified], and he summoned the centurion and asked him whether He was already dead. 
45 And when he learned from the centurion [that Jesus was in fact dead], he gave the body to Joseph [by granting him permission to remove it]. 
46 So Joseph purchased a [fine] linen cloth [for wrapping the body], and after taking Jesus down [from the cross], he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and placed Him in a tomb which had been cut out of rock. Then he rolled a [large, wheel-shaped] stone against the entrance of the tomb. 
47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were [carefully] watching to see where He was laid.



Matthew 27: Jesus Is Buried
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. 

58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus [so that he might bury Him], and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 
59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth (burial wrapping),
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock; and he rolled a large stone over the entrance of the tomb and went away. 
61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.

62 The next day, that is, the day after the [day of] preparation [for the Sabbath], the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate, 

63 and said, “Sir, we have remembered that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise [from the dead].’ 
64 Therefore, give orders to have the tomb made secure and safeguarded until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception [the reporting of His resurrection] will be worse than the first [the reporting that He is the Messiah].”
 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard [of soldiers]; go [with them], make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 
66 So they went and made the tomb secure, and along with [stationing] a guard of soldiers [to be on watch] they set a seal on the stone.

THREE CROSSES -- GOOD FRIDAY -- EASTER

WHY EASTER
Things were going on as usual the day that Jesus died.
The world was hustling all about Him, but He was alone denied.
He was just another criminal to the throng that saw Him there.
They saw, but shunned involvement, who was He, that they should care?
Some were sad to see such treatment, and they wondered what He'd done.
His face was sad, His eyes were lonely,
Could He really be God's son?
His face showed anguish, pain, and heartache.
His form was stooped beneath the load.
But no one cared enough to help Him as blood dripped freely on the road.
Where were Peter, James, and John? As He trudged this path alone?
Surely someone would stand by Him. Surely someone, but there were none.
Where were the blind, the lame, the lepers, that were so thankful He had passed by?
It's been only days since He'd healed them, He'd listen to to their cry.
Then I heard the blow of a hammer. Then I heard a sudden thud.
Then it seemed I heard faint moaning. I saw bloodstains in the mud!
Then a loud cry resounded, as the thunder shook the sky.
And the whole world trembled in darkness, saw our lonely Savior die.
Some thought it was over, when He hung His head in death, but it was only the beginning when He seized His last earthly breath.
And so our life is just beginning, when we are laid away.
Our soul goes to God who gave it. Our body back to clay.
But our soul lives on forever, that's why Jesus came.
He made it simple that no one need to be lost .
For we are His by just taking His name.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Matthew 27
33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

GETHSEMANE

The Garden of Gethsemane
Matthew 26: 36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane (olive-press), and He told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee [James and John], He began to be grieved and greatly distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, so that I am almost dying of sorrow. Stay here and stay awake and keep watch with Me.”
39 And after going a little farther, He fell face down and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible [that is, consistent with Your will], let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not stay awake and keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep actively watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words once more. 45 Then He returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Listen, the hour [of My sacrifice] is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners [whose way and nature is to oppose God]. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, My betrayer is near!”

THE CHURCH THAT DIED

Revelation 3:14-17
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth.’”

There’s a story told of a man who graduated from seminary and was asked to accept a pastorate at a small church in Texas. The deacons who requested that he come to their fellowship stated that their church had been very dynamic in the local area but over the years had shrunk in size and influence due to poor attendance and involvement of the Christians in the community. The pastor, anxious to serve his Lord, accepted the position.

Upon arriving at the church and through some investigation the pastor discovered that unfortunately the assessment of the deacons was very much true. Attendance had dropped from hundreds to only a half a dozen dedicated saints. After much prayer the pastor decided to hold a funeral service for the church. A date was set, preparations made and announcements printed in the local newspaper and mailings. All the community received an invitation to come to the funeral of the local church.

The day of the funeral came and hundreds of Christians flocked to the church they had once attended. Anxious to see how the preacher would conduct the service, Christians who used to teach Sunday school, served meals to the homeless and sang praises to God in this church gathered together in this house of God to witness a commemoration of its death. All those who entered the building could not help but notice the casket at the front of the church draped in black.

The pastor walked up to the podium and greeted everyone in a very solemn tone and asked them to bow their heads while he led them in a prayer. After saying amen, the pastor began his eulogy for the church. He shared how he had interviewed members of the community and researched the history of the church. He proceeded to share about how the church had ministered over its lifetime. He covered the influence the church had upon not only the Christians in the community but also the non-Christians as well. He listed all the ministries that had at one time been in place to serve the homeless, the abused and the orphaned. The pastor shared that unfortunately that over the years the church had died a slow and agonizing death. When he was finished, the pastor walked down and stood by the casket. He shared that now to pay last respects to the church everyone would pass by the open casket.

The pastor turned, opened the lid of the casket and asked the first row of people to proceed. The people rose and walked along the edge of the casket to view its contents. Women cried and men wept as they looked inside. Many Christians could hardly remain standing after they had looked within the ebony tomb that held the dead church. What had these people seen within the casket to bring upon them such deep emotion?

Within the open casket lay a mirror so that whoever looked inside would see a reflection of themselves staring back at them. The pastor knew that the church had died because the spirituality of the people had died. He knew that the church was only alive when the people allowed God to work in their lives through studying His Word, listening to His Holy Spirit, sharing the gospel and ministering to those in need.

We are told in Ephesians 5:23 and Colossians 1:18 that Christ is head of the church which is His body. This church that belongs to God is made up of every believer who has accepted Him as Lord and Savior. Local church fellowships are gatherings of servants of Jesus who live close to one another and who wish to serve and worship God together. While local churches can wax and wane and possibly even die at times, God’s universal church will never die. We are told this in Matthew 16:18. But as the story above illustrates a local fellowship of Christians will become ill when those who belong to it do not strive to live as servants of the most high. In 1 Peter 2:9 we are told that every believer is a member of a royal priesthood. Belonging to a priesthood carries with it responsibilities. Priests are expected to dedicate themselves to their Lord. They are to seek to obey what God says. They are expected to serve others and follow the pattern of behavior and actions that reflect the Lord they serve. Priests are expected to know something of spiritual matters and develop in wisdom as they grow in the knowledge of their Savior. Each Christian in a local church is a priest and is expected by God to follow the calling of the priesthood that is laid before them as servants of Christ. A church fellowship grows weak and dies when Christians do not follow the path of the priesthood.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 12 we are told that there are spiritual gifts and ministries that are given to Christians, members of God’s royal priesthood. These gifts are given for the common good. That is, these gifts are bestowed upon Christians by the Holy Spirit for the purpose of serving one another and others in the community in the purposes of God. Accepting Christ as one’s Savior grants salvation to that person but it also brings with it a responsibility. Each Christian is given specific spiritual gifts to be used to serve others in the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit distributes these gifts to be used. When we fail to use them as intended others in the body suffer. Spiritual gifts are meant to be expressed so that people can be ministered to and God can be glorified. A church fellowship withers and dies when people do not seek to use their spiritual gifts.

In Hebrews 10:25 there is an issue addressed by Paul concerning church attendance. Apparently there were those in the Christian community who felt it was not important to attend a local fellowship on a regular basis. Their invalid reasoning led them to believe that they were fine not to fellowship with other Christians on a regular basis. Paul is stating here that nothing could be further from the truth. When we fail to attend church regularly we miss out on the teaching of God’s word, corporate worship of our Lord and service opportunities. We also fail to be able to express and grow our spiritual gifts. We are not giving opportunities to others to express their spiritual gifts towards us when we fail to fellowship with them. Attending a local fellowship places us in a position of accountability for how we live. We all need accountability to continue in our growth as Christians. A church dies when members fail to attend church and prevent their spirituality from growing to maturity.

In Acts 2:42-47 we are given the recipe for a living church that avoids death. The guidelines of the early church were to devote themselves to the apostle’s teaching, fellowship and prayer. When the first Christians lived according to these truths dynamic things happened. They were filled with awe. God worked in their midst. They saw their lives and the lives of others changed. They witnessed miraculous signs of all sorts because the power of the Holy Spirit could be manifest in such a healthy body of believers. Through their fellowship they shared with one another and met each other’s needs. They were dedicated to meeting together on a regular basis. They grew closer together in their relationships because they were based on the love and truth of God. Out of this fellowship and dynamic church life arose a praise and worship of God. In addition; the non-Christian community thought highly of them for what they stood for and how they served the needy. It is true that the reputation of a living and growing church influences society’s perception of the nature and character of God. Because of this dedicated behavior of first-century Christians the church grew by leaps and bounds. A local church will never die when following these guidelines. Your local church will never die when YOU follow these guidelines.

Ephesians 3:20-21
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

PALM SUNDAY
MARK 11:1-11 EXPLORING THE PASSAGE
Instructions Jesus gave to two of His disciples Mark 11:1-3
As they approached Jerusalem, coming to Bethphage and Bethany by the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples ahead of him. (2) He gave them the instructions, Go to the village that is ahead of you. When you enter it you will immediately find a colt tied there, which no man has ever ridden. Untie him and bring him here. (3) If any one asks you, Why are you doing this? say to them, The Lord needs him; and immediately he will send him back here. (Mark 11:1-3)
Jesus instructs these two disciples to go ahead of them to the next village. Upon entering the village they will immediately see a colt tied there, one that has never been ridden. They are to untie this colt and bring it back to Jesus. If anyone asks them what they are doing, they are to say, “The Lord needs this colt,” and immediately they will be given permission to take it.
These two disciples follow Jesus’ instructions Mark 11:4-6
So they went, and found a colt tied at the door outside in the open street; and they untied him. (5) Some men who were standing there asked them, What are you doing, untying the colt? (6) Then they told them just what Jesus had said; and the men let them go. (Mark 11:4-6)
When the disciples enter the village they find the colt, just as Jesus said they would. When they proceed to untie it and are asked what they are doing, they say just what Jesus told them to say. Then they are given permission to take the colt. This whole incident would have impressed upon the disciples the fact that Jesus is in control of all things: He knows everything and He has authority over all. This knowledge should have been a source of comfort to the disciples with regard to the events that would take place during the coming days of Jesus’ passion.
Jesus instructs His disciples to bring Him the colt Matthew 21:4-5,
Now this happened so that the word that was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, (5) Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King comes to you, meek, and riding upon a donkey, and upon a colt the foal of a donkey. (Matthew 21:4-5)
Jesus rode into Jerusalem upon a colt in order to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King comes to you, meek, and riding upon a donkey, and upon a colt the foal of a donkey.”
According to Zechariah 9:9, the Messiah entering Jerusalem riding upon a colt indicates His humble character. The Messiah sent by the Lord is not self-assertive, rather He humbly submits Himself unto His heavenly Father (Matthew 26:39).
Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem Mark 11:8-10 & Matthew 21:9
Many people spread their garments on the road; and others spread branches which they had cut from the fields. (9) They who went before them, and they who followed them, cried out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! (10) Blessed is the kingdom that is coming, the kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest! (Mark 11:8-10)
The crowds that went before him, and those who followed, cried out, Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! (Matthew 21:9)
The people respond by receiving Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah, hailing Him as “the son of David.” Some of them laid their garments upon the road while others cut palm branches and spread them over the roadway.
The people cry out, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Psalm 118:26

We Need To Confess Our Sin

Proverbs 28:13 People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
Hosea 5:15  Then I will return to my place until they admit their guilt and turn to me. For as soon as trouble comes, they will earnestly search for me.”

God Forgives Our Sin

1 John 1:7-9 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.  If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

Forgiving One Another’s Sins

Luke 17:3-4 So watch yourselves!    “If another believer sins, rebuke that person; then if there is repentance, forgive. Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.”
